What to Wear for Studio Baby or Family Photos in Niagara (And What to Skip So Everyone Feels Great)

Trying to figure out outfits for family photos can feel like way too much. When you’re running on little sleep and juggling snacks, nap schedules, and laundry, pulling together “Pinterest-worthy” outfits often falls to the bottom of the list.

Here’s the good news, you don’t have to do it alone.

I’ve been photographing families in Niagara for nearly two decades, and as a mom of four, I know how to keep things simple and beautiful. If you’re getting ready for a studio baby or family session, here’s a breakdown of what works, what doesn’t, and how I make it all way easier.

What to Wear for Studio Photos

Stick to soft, neutral tones - Think whites, creams, taupes, dusty blues, muted greens, or soft greys. These shades reflect beautifully in our naturally lit studio and create that clean, timeless look that never goes out of style.

Mix, don’t match - Matching outfits aren’t necessary. In fact, it’s better if you don’t. Choose a shared colour palette and let each person wear something that feels good within it. Example: Mom in soft oatmeal, dad in sage, baby in cream, and a sibling in pale pink or grey.

Choose texture over pattern - Some of the best fabrics for photos are linen, cotton knits, gauze, and ribbed or waffle textures. They add interest without distracting from the people in the frame. Patterns, especially bold ones, tend to pull attention away from connection.

Add light layers - Light layering adds variety to your images and makes transitions easier. Think a cardigan over a dress, a cozy swaddle for your baby, or a soft blanket that ties your colour scheme together.

Coordinate with the studio environment - The studio is soft, neutral, and filled with natural light. Choosing outfits that work well with this setting helps create a finished, cohesive look in your photos.

What Not to Wear for Studio Photos

Skip logos, graphics, and text - Even the “Mama Bear” tee. Words and logos draw attention for the wrong reasons and tend to date your images. Plus, they usually stretch across the front or wrap around the sides, so unless you're standing perfectly still and facing forward, they won’t read well in photos. And really, who wants that?

No time to shop? I’ve got you - The studio wardrobe is fully stocked with flattering, neutral-toned pieces for moms, babies, and kids. You don’t have to scramble to find the perfect outfit. During your planning call, we’ll go over your options and make sure everyone is styled and session-ready without the stress.

Avoid neon or overly dark colours - Bright shades (like hot pink or red) can reflect oddly on the skin. Deep blacks can lose detail and create harsh contrast and make you appear larger in a white room. Stick with softer colours that keep the focus on your family’s connection.

Say no to itchy or fussy fabrics - If an outfit feels scratchy or tight, your kid will let us know. Comfort is key. Breathable, soft fabrics keep everyone happy and relaxed.

Don’t match head-to-toe - Matching outfits for the whole family can feel stiff and dated. Aim for harmony, not uniforms. The goal is real, not rigid.

If You’re Not Sure What to Wear, Don’t Worry. That’s My Job

Every session includes access to the full studio wardrobe, which is filled with soft, neutral-toned pieces in a wide range of sizes. I’ll help you style your family during your planning appointment so there’s nothing left to guess.

You don’t need to run to the mall. Just show up. I’ve got you.

Bonus Tips from a Photographer (and Mom) Who Gets It

  • Bring a backup outfit for baby just in case.

  • Choose pieces that feel comfortable and make you feel confident.

  • Try everything on ahead of time to avoid day-of surprises.

  • Don’t stress. Your love and connection will shine brighter than anything you wear.
