Ready, Set, Smile: How to Prep Your Kids (and Yourself) for a Studio Session

Getting everyone out the door with clean clothes and smiles intact can feel like a heroic feat, especially when you’ve had four hours of sleep and someone’s refusing to wear pants. If you’re feeling a little nervous about your upcoming family session, you’re not alone.

Here’s the thing. I’ve been a Niagara family photographer for over 20 years. I’ve raised four kids of my own. I’ve seen every meltdown, outfit mishap, and snack emergency you can imagine. My sessions are designed with real families in mind: calm, flexible, and completely meltdown-friendly.

Here’s how to set yourself and your kids up for photo day success without all the stress.

1. Get Rest (or at Least Try To)

Well-rested kids are happier kids. If your little one still naps, we’ll try to avoid booking during their usual downtime. Even if we can’t, don’t stress. I always build in extra time for breaks, snacks, and cuddles. If someone ends up in your lap for a while, that’s often when the sweetest photos happen.

2. Eat First (Yes, Even You)

Hungry kids and photo sessions don’t mix. Make sure everyone has eaten something before you arrive, even if it’s just a small snack or smoothie. Bring along:
🌿 Non-messy snacks
🌿 A sippy cup or bottle
🌿 A treat to look forward to after, like “We’re going for ice cream” or “We’ll stop by the bakery on the way home”

3. Bring a Familiar Comfort

A favourite blanket, stuffed animal, or little toy can make a big difference in helping your child feel secure. Even if it doesn’t make it into the final images, it’s worth packing. I also have many baby-friendly items on hand if we need a gentle distraction or a reset moment that looks great in photos.

4. Don’t Over-Hype It

It’s tempting to give the big speech before a session, but sometimes less is more. Instead of “You have to smile and behave because these photos are important,” try something simple like “We’re going to see Karen and hang out while she takes some pictures.” Low-key, pressure-free, and focused on connection. That’s how we get the best smiles.

5. Meltdowns Happen. I Promise It’s Okay

Your toddler flops on the floor. Your baby needs a feed. Someone starts crying just as we’re about to begin. Totally normal. I’m not here to push through chaos. I’m here to move with it. We take breaks, reset, and keep things light. Some of the most beautiful photos happen in those honest, in-between moments when you least expect them.

6. Trust the Process. You’re in Good Hands

You already did the hardest part. Getting everyone out the door. Once you arrive, you can exhale. Hair and makeup will already be done in your home, so you’ll walk in feeling photo-ready and taken care of. I’ve got a curated wardrobe waiting for you, snacks stocked, and a calm cozy studio space designed for little ones. Your only job is to be present with your family. I’ll guide you through the rest.

The Takeaway

Preparing for your studio session doesn’t have to feel like a big production. A little rest, a few snacks, a simple mindset shift, and a whole lot of grace go a long way. You don’t need to show up perfect. You just need to show up.

Let’s make something beautiful together, messes and all.
