How to Prepare Your Toddler for a New Sibling's Photoshoot

Hey, Niagara parents!

I know you're excited to have professional photos taken of your newest little bundle of joy. But if this is your second baby, you may wonder how to handle your toddler during the photoshoot with their new sibling.

I've photographed hundreds of families in Grimsby, Ontario, so I've picked up some handy tips for ensuring your toddler is engaged and having fun instead of hiding from the camera.

Involve Them in the Planning

First things first, get your toddler excited about the photoshoot. Show them ideas on my website, Instagram, or search Pinterest for cute sibling poses. Talk to them about what gentle means, so they can be careful when laying hands on your new baby.

Come Prepared

Pack a colourless snack to keep your toddler content between shots. We have crayons, stickers, many photographable toys, and activities here in the studio to prevent boredom or tantrums.

Schedule Smart

Plan your newborn session around your toddler's naptime. They'll be well-rested and less likely to act out. If you’re worried they’ll be grumpy, pack an extra snack or fun treat.

Bribery Works

Listen, I'm not above slipping a roll of rockets to a three-year-old in exchange for a smile! Have a special gummy snack or toy on standby to reward good behaviour. Praise and high fives reinforce it, too.

Give Them a "Job"

Giving your toddler a role in the photoshoot makes them more engaged. I may ask them to hold props, pass me items, or "take pictures" with our wooden toy camera. They'll love feeling helpful and important.

Take Some Solo Shots

I will snap some portraits of just your toddler too. This will help them warm up to me, and we’ll sneak in candid giggles! Then, they will feel included during the sibling pics.

Get Down on Their Level

I'll be shooting on the ground to capture sweet toddler interactions. Having them sit or lie down makes it more comfy and fun versus standing stiffly and impatiently. Beanbag chairs and blankets help.

Editing Magic

Don't stress if your toddler has a small scratch on their face or a skinned knee. That's what Photoshop is for! I'll edit out those temporary boo-boos so the final photos are frame-worthy.

Stay Positive

If your little one starts melting down, stay upbeat and patient. Taking a break to reset with snacks, movement, or their favorite song can help. Remember, this is new for them too. Radiating calm, happy energy keeps the shoot playful.

You've got this! Follow my tips and we’ll get great portraits in no time. Reach out with any other questions about preparing your toddler for photo day. This is going to be so much fun!
